The report, From Research to Reality: Research and Innovation in the NHS as Key to Enabling the 10-Year Plan, warns that without a system-wide commitment to embedding research and innovation, efforts to reform the NHS will fall short.
Dr Sonja Marjanovic, director of healthcare innovation, industry and policy at RAND Europe, said: ‘The NHS can't afford to see research and innovation as a "nice to have" – it's the key to achieving sustainable NHS reforms, with impact, and at scale.'
The study shows the impact of a focus on research and innovation - including delivering higher-quality treatment and improved patient experience, making the workplace more attractive and driving economic growth - and says systemic barriers blocking progress such as red tape can be addressed.
It sets out five breakthrough areas – genomics, AI in cancer diagnosis, digital mental health, technology-enabled remote monitoring and participatory research – that are already improving healthcare and where urgent action is needed.
In addition, the report sets out seven key actions to embed research in the NHS, from strengthening the workforce and improving data systems, to upgrading infrastructure and streamlining funding. It also calls for clearer R&D regulation, stronger collaboration across health and industry, and greater patient and public involvement.
