The trust said it had ‘extended the admissions previously made in terms of the abuse' by disgraced former surgeon Dr Iuliu Stan.

The update comes after RCHT apologised for the conduct of Dr Stan who worked for the hospital between 2015 and 2020 and was struck off in 2024.

RCHT said it continued to work with Devon and Cornwall Police on its investigation and the identification of victims.

A spokesperson said: ‘We apologise to those who have been affected and do not underestimate how difficult it is for patients to engage with this process given the nature of Dr Stan's abuse. We have written to a number of former patients of Dr Stan and are committed to making psychological and counselling support available to his victims, tailored to their individual needs.

‘We continue to encourage anyone affected to contact us if they have queries around the treatment they received from Dr Stan or need support.'

Gary Walker, partner at Enable Law, which is representing over 40 of Dr Stan's patients,  told HM: ‘RCHT's latest admission is very significant. Their previous admission of liability related to the prescription and administration of rectal medication. Following our challenge, they have now accepted that Dr Stan was also negligent when carrying out any intimate procedure that could include rectal examinations, insertion and extraction of urinary catheterisations and testicular examinations.'

Walker said there were ‘potentially hundreds of patients' who had been impacted by Dr Stan's actions but not been notified by the trust.

‘It is vital these patients are identified and then contacted and notified in a sensitive and appropriate manner to avoid them being further traumatised,' he added.

He also called for a ‘thorough an independent investigation' by the secretary of state.
