Maple Ward, which is now part of the newly formed Hampshire and Isle of Wight NHS Foundation Trust, was rated good overall as well as also good for being well-led and safe in a focused inspection.
The inspection of the 10-bedded psychiatric intensive care unit in September was prompted by an incident on the ward that resulted in a safeguarding enquiry and the ward voluntarily closing to new admissions.
A CQC spokesperson said: ‘CQC assessed Maple ward following the ward re-opening to new admissions and were assured that staff were always looking to improve people's safety and learn from any incidents that did happen. Staff could also recognise safeguarding concerns and knew what actions to take to protect people.'
At the previous inspection CQC found concerns with the safety of medicines management at the service and issued the trust with a warning notice. The CQC said it found no concerns around medicines management at this inspection.
Wendy Rees, managing director for Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Division at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘We are really pleased to have maintained our Good rating for Maple Ward, and that the areas of improvement the CQC raised with us have been robustly addressed.
‘Learning and improving is a vital part of healthcare so we are particularly pleased to see the CQC noting "that the trust was always looking to improve patient safety and learn from any incidents that did happen". An immense amount of credit must go to our staff who have maintained high standards for patients and improved the key elements identified at a time of significant organisational change as we developed into a new trust.'
