The report by FrameWorks UK found people are increasingly aware of how social context, in terms of pay and social support, impacts health.

Tamsyn Hyatt, director of evidence, FrameWorks UK, said: ‘This research shows that people are increasingly aware that we all need the right building blocks of health – things like secure jobs, warm homes, and affordable, healthy food – to build a thriving UK.

‘This shift in public thinking shows that not only does our Government have a responsibility to improve the nation's health, it has a clear mandate to do so.'

Paul McDonald, chief campaigns officer at the campaigning group Health Equals, said: ‘Whole-government action on health and tackling inequalities is needed to reduce the life expectancy gap that is cutting lives short across the UK, and it's great to see public support for this.

‘Our health is shaped by the world around us, from quality homes that are warm and safe, to stable jobs and neighbourhoods with green space and clean air. Investment in these essential building blocks of good health will help us to make health equal.'
